Of rocks and mountains in the local art world

• Falling rock: Massachusetts artist and designer Ron Magers has created a prototype “Profiler,” a device that will be part of a proposed memorial to the Old Man of the Mountain — may he rest in peace. The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund is trying to raise $4.8 million for a permanent memorial in Franconia Notch State Park. Work by sculptor Shelly Bradbury and designer Ron Magers of Essex, Mass., was chosen after a nationwide search. Magers’ concept is to point angled rods, cast with irregular bumps, toward the cliff so viewers can see the exact profile of the Old Man against the cliff. The central element of the memorial, five massive granite monoliths, will include the largest stone ever quarried in North America, at more than 130 tons. Magers was set to test Profiler Sept. 4. Groundbreaking for the proposed memorial is planned May 3, 2008, the fifth anniversary of the fall of the Old Man; see oldmanofthemountainlegacyfund.org.
• More mountain: On a smaller, closer hill, join the free guided hike at the Andres Institute of Art Sculpture Park in Brookline, Saturday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. There are more than 50 sculptures created by artists from around the world at the former ski hill at 98 Route 13, 673-8441, andresinstitute.org.
• More sculpture: There’s more outdoor sculpture to see at the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden through Oct. 20. Pass by during the opening for the new gallery shows, Friday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. See paintings by the gallery artists, pottery by Glen MacInnis, “Wild Life Bronze Sculpture” by naturalist David Smus and “Katrina — and All That Jazz” mixed-media collages by Susan Rock at 236 Hopkinton Road, Concord, 226-2046.
• Learn: Get your free bit of culture and attend a Currier Museum docent talk about “European and American Impressionism” Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Concord Library, 45 Green St. The Currier folks also bring you an installment of their free monthly Art Bites lunchtime lecture at Currier Downtown, 52 Hanover St. in Manchester, 668-0256, Thursday, Sept. 20, at 12:30 p.m. Bring your lunch and listen to “A Work of Art for Kindred Spirits: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Zimmerman House.”
• Free ride: The third of four Open Doors Trolley Tours of Manchester’s museums, studios and galleries happens Thursday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. Catch the free trolley at Manchester City Hall, or walk around to visit the Manchester Artists Association Gallery, Art 3, East Colony Fine Art and other Langer Place studios, Currier Downtown, the Millyard Museum, the SEE Science Center, the Franco American Centre and Manchester Community Access Media. As well as a reception for September feature artists Roxanne Labbe and Judy McLean, East Colony is holding a grand opening for their special theme show, “Inspired by.” The studio’s 27 members have each produced a piece inspired by their favorite Old Master artist.
