Drinking for animals; masters of woodcraft

• Wine design: An Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire brand wine might be on local store shelves soon. ARLNH is looking to artists for help with the unique fundraising concept. They need a series of three to five art pieces that have similar “feels” for the labels. They need artwork that hasn’t been used for any other purposes, and rights to it would become property of ARLNH if used. If any of you animal-loving creative folks want to lend a hand, submit at least two examples of work as high- resolution jpgs to Robin Ahlgren at robin@rescueleague.org. They also want to find artworks that “reflect the values” of the organization. They offered theme suggestions including “the power of the human/animal bond.” Learn about the League at www.rescueleague.org. Call 472-5714 for details on the label search. They are taking examples through Sept. 1, and will choose by Sept. 8.

• Previews: The New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association does an auction every year that costs $75 just to attend. But if you are into woodworking and want to see what a master can make without paying the high ticket cost, head to Concord. NHFMA is showing off the pieces for their annual auction from July 30 through Aug. 28 at New Hampshire Historical Society’s Tuck Library, at 30 Park St. The “Art for Living: New Hampshire Furniture Masters” exhibit is meant to familiarize people with the pieces who might be interested in bidding on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Wentworth-by-the-Sea Hotel in New Castle. The Concord show kicks off with a silent auction and reception Thursday, July 31, at 5:30 p.m. People can bid on small handmade work and meet the Masters. Income supports their Prison Outreach program and Studio-Based Learning program. Conservator John D. Childs of Historic New England gives a lecture on “Historic Finishes” Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the library. He’s worked at the Metropolitan Museum, the Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. 

Sy Mahfuz, owner of Persian Rug Galleries in Nashua and a principal of MERA Consulting Group, talks about “Mosaics in Wool” Thursday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. Ted Blachly, Jeffrey Cooper, Garrett Hack, David Lamb, David Leach, Tom McLaughlin, Jere Osgood, Brian Sargent, Gary Spykman and Bill Thomas are the Masters involved in the auction in 2008. Guest artists this year are Leonard Bellanca, Aurelio Bolognesi, John Cameron, Sam Norris, Brian Reid, Peter Turner, Tom Walsh and Leah Woods.  Prison Outreach Program participants are Robert DeMeritt and Eric Grant. Visit www.furnituremasters.org or call 898-0242 for more about the Masters.
