Local Color
Continuing tradition and exchanging culture

• Back in time: An antique theorem is a hand-stenciled painting, usually of a basket of fruit and flowers. Historic decorative artist and writer Linda Carter Lefko researches topics such as historic graining, painted and cut silhouettes and theorems. She grew up in a home filled with antiques and attended auctions with her mother, an antique dealer. Also a speaker and teacher, Lefko is giving a gallery talk called “Historic New England Wall Murals of the Rufus Porter School,” at the New Hampshire Antique Co-op Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. The hour-long lecture emphasizes New Hampshire murals and accompanies an exhibit of Lefko’s 18th- and 19th-century reproduction hand-painted and hand-stenciled works at New Hampshire Antique Co-op through Sept. 30. The Co-op is at 323 Elm St./Route 101A in Milford, 673-8499.

• Exchange program: New Hampshire artwork and that of Québecois artists will be displayed together as part of an artist exchange program with the Galérie d’art ArtAzo of Sherbrooke, Québec, at Manchester’s Franco-American Centre’s Beliveau Galérie. The exhibit opens with a reception Thursday, Aug. 7, between 5 and 7 p.m. at 52 Concord St. As part of the program, there will be en plein air painting sessions Friday, Aug. 8, through Sun., Aug. 10, at City Hall Plaza on Elm Street in Manchester and in Victory Park on Chestnut Street.

• Trade stuff: If you have art supplies or materials you aren’t using, artwork filling up your studio or other such objects you need to find a new home for, consider signing up for an ellO gallery & shop swap meet. • Compete: Enter photos in the categories of animals, landscapes and wildflowers in the Massabesic Audubon Center’s second “Wild New Hampshire” photography contest. There is a contest for those under age 17, and one for adults 18 and older. Submissions will be accepted between Aug. 1 and Aug. 22, and winners will be displayed at the Auburn center in October. • Tradition continues: The 75th League of New Hampshire Craftsmen fair is going on from Aug. 2 through Aug. 10 at the Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury where you can find work from 350 of the league’s juried members, live music, demonstrations, tours and more. Admission costs $10 for two days. Kids 12 and under are admitted free. Call 224-3375 or see www.nhcrafts.org for the details. The League recently awarded an annual $1,000 craft education scholarship to Meredith Ashley Joyce of Hollis. Joyce graduated from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass., and will study metalsmithing at Miami University in Ohio.
