• From nature: Suzanne Binnie uses a limited palette to produce the colors characteristic of her floral paintings. Adele Sanborn’s calligraphy is accented with her handmade papers. Work by both is featured in “Inspirations” at East Colony Fine Art through Aug. 23. • Kids at the Currier: Admission is free at the Currier Museum of Art between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. They hold their monthly “Family Saturday” program Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with art activities, a guided family gallery walk at 11:30 a.m. and the new Discovery Gallery. • Maternal message: Women can win cash prizes and a chance at a national-level art competition by submitting artwork to the New Hampshire Mothers Cultural Arts Competition & Gallery Exhibit. The theme is the home, family, mothers or motherhood. Art and craft media include oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, sculpture, mixed media, photography, computer graphics, ceramics, jewelry and metalwork, textile, fabric, porcelain dolls and stained glass. Women can also submit literature in the form of poetry, essay, article or short story. Vocal and instrumental music can also be entered. The deadline is Sept. 10. The national competition is in April in Oregon. This is the local chapter of American Mothers, an interfaith, nonpolitical, national nonprofit organization (www.americanmothers.org). • New wave: “Home and Retreat” was organized to show work from emerging artists of the Monadnock region as well as those who travel to work in that area. The show runs at the Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries at 30 Grove St. in Peterborough. “This fun and thought-provoking exhibit allows the viewer to challenge [her] definition of what is art,” said Elizabeth Smith, Sharon Arts executive director. Candice Cassella and Mary D. Goldthwaite curate. Goldthwaite, originally from South Hampton, lives and teaches high school art in Peterborough. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Cassella has studied in Florence, Italy, and is a gallery associate at Sharon Arts. Alison Fritz, Rachel Garceau, Eric Gagne, Aimee LaRue, Christopher Myott, Ben Putnam, Noah Sparkes, Erin Sweeney, Kat Thorpe, Liza Twery, Rachael Wheeler, Dana Wood, Mike Wrobel and Albert Zuger are among those exhibiting. Acousitic duo Redwing Blackbird and guitar duo Tell Stories with indie folk singer Christine Hayward perform as part of the show Friday, Sept. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The work is exhibited through Sept. 27.
• Wine and cheese: Visit the Franco-American Centre’s Beliveau Galérie to see work by Québecois artists and locals as part of an artist exchange program with the Galérie d’art ArtAzo of Sherbrooke, Québec Thursday, Aug. 7, between 5 and 7 p.m. at 52 Concord St. in Manchester. Some artists will also be painting en plein air at City Hall Plaza and Victory Park in Manchester, Aug. 8 through Aug. 10. The Underground M.A.P. (Music, Art, & Poetry) Project is planning to host a gallery show with the theme “People” opening with a reception Friday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 10 p.m., at 76 Lowell St. in Manchester. It runs through Aug. 20.
The Art Concord gallery night is going on between 5 and 8 p.m. on Aug. 7. Kimball-Jenkins School of Art hosts “Works on Paper,” featuring art by Rosemary Bernardi, Cynthia Vascak, Susan Haas, Molly Fletcher and Mary Mead at 266 North Main St. An exhibit of items from the 75-year-old League of NH Craftsmen’s permanent collection is at 205 North Main St. Paintings by gallery artists are at Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden, 236 Hopkinton Road. Concord watercolor painter and photographer Fran Philippe is exhibiting at the Hopkinton Library Gallery in Contoocook. Philippe studied with locals Sylvia Brofos and Kevin Dadoly and is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association.
