NHAA shows off at the Currier

• Just color: Pamela Tarbell’s 2003-2006 series “Spirit of the Dance” was inspired by Native American clothing, iconography and designs. Her new work, however, gets rid of anything decorative or representational and just shows color, according to a press release. “Lines” will be on exhibit at the Lyceum Gallery at The Derryfield School, 2108 River Road in Manchester (669-4524), from Jan. 16 through Feb. 16. Tarbell said creating work for students “inspired me to go beyond the flat surface.” She was more concerned with lines and patterns and with challenging herself, she said. Many are tall and narrow or made up of panels. “I had a good time experimenting,” Tarbell said. She included two pieces she made 10 years ago, which tie in with this show. Meet Tarbell Friday, Jan. 16, between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at a gallery reception. Tarbell owns Mill Brook Gallery in Concord, is a trustee of New Hampshire Citizens for the Arts, and is on the boards of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and Concord Creative Economy.
• Annuals: Fifty works in a variety of media by New Hampshire Art Association members were chosen from 250 submitted to hang in the Currier Museum of Art during the 61st New Hampshire Art Association Exhibition. The show runs from Jan. 17 through Feb. 16. The Peabody Essex Museum curator of contemporary art, Trevor Smith, adjudicated. Smith was also a curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and has worked in Australian museums, according to a Currier release. The NHAA itself is a juried organization, and members also come from surrounding states. The Currier is at 150 Ash St., Manchester (669-6144, www.currier.org), and adult admission costs $10. Youth under 18 visit for free. The NHAA also exhibits member work throughout the year at its Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, 136 State St. in Portsmouth (431-4230, www.nhartassociation.org).
Coincidently, Sharon Arts members are holding their 61st annual members exhibition Jan. 16 through Feb. 28, in their Downtown Galleries at 30 Grove St. in Peterborough (www.sharonarts.org, 924-7676). There’s a preview reception Friday, Jan. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m.
• Snow: The Manchester Artists Association Gallery focuses on the inspiration of the current season with its “Winter White” exhibit of new art. The group show includes paintings, photography, small works, prints and note cards. The show runs through Feb. 22, with an opening reception Thursday, Jan. 22, from 5 to 8 p.m., at 1528 Elm St. in Manchester (785-6437, www.manchester-artists.org/gallery/).
