Publisher's Note: A not-so-spooky Halloween

I was out jogging for the first time in a while last Sunday when I came on a group of kids dressed up as witches, ghosts and some mass murderer. It was 1 p.m. in Manchester and the sun was shining. Must be Halloween in the Queen City.
I’ve lived in both Manchester and Nashua and really enjoy both cities. My family and I tend to spend Saturdays in Concord enjoying its friendly downtown — but Manchester is home and thus where we spend Halloween.
But this year my nine-year-old decided against going out. Why? In his words, trick-or-treating on a Sunday afternoon is “lame.”
It is.
Halloween is all about mystery and fun. There is little mystery or spooky fun at 1 p.m.
Local police argue that it’s safer and as a result there are fewer calls to police. I’m sure that’s true. But using that logic we should cancel New Year’s Eve. Of course we should do all we can to make Halloween as safe as possible, but having it during the day isn’t Halloween; it would be like counting down to midnight at 5:30.
Some of my best memories from childhood are of trick-or-treating around town. It was one of those few times when kids ruled our little world. It’s sad that that’s one experience my son will miss out on here.
In making our kids safer, we need to be aware that we can easily destroy the fun of being a child.
