• Hollywood Ten: Milford Area Players offer about three free staged readings each year in their Off the MAP series. Kevin Riley directs Neal Blaiklock and Craig Ciampa in a reading of Trumbo: Red, White & Blacklisted, by Christopher Trumbo (based on the letters of Dalton Trumbo), Sunday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Amato Center, 56 Mont Vernon St. in Milford. Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was imprisoned and blacklisted after standing up to the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947, according to a release from MAP. Visit www.MilfordAreaPlayers.org.
• Mystery Team: Derrick Comedy members were at the Sundance Film Festival this time last year with their first feature film, which was made in Manchester in 2008 when the five were just a few years out of college. The director and producer are Manchester natives, although Derrick Comedy is based in New York. Mystery Team has toured the country in limited release over the past few months, and screened at the New Hampshire Film Festival in Portsmouth in October. If you missed its local engagement then, another chance is coming up about an hour’s drive south this time, instead of east. Mystery Team is scheduled at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 with about three screenings each day (none Jan. 31). • Try out: Alexius OmniMedia, Kinney Hill Media Partners and Left Bank Films are shooting a 26-episode Web series in the Portsmouth area. Proper Manors, directed by Chase Bailey, is about “seven teenagers, small town America and how their families are inter-connected by scandals, secrets and history,” according to a press release. • After work: Brandon Mallard said he’s actually surprised at the turnout of Cabaret After Hours at the Element Lounge, 1055 Elm St. in Manchester (627-2922). Mallard and Barbara Lawler have been singing there for the past few months from 7 to 10 p.m. on Mondays. Every third Monday, a guest singer takes Lawler’s place. Mallard said he expected people to request more standards, but they’ve actually been looking for the old classic Broadway tunes, including younger people. Mallard co-founded Cabaret De Boheme, which presents the Element show (www.nhcabaret.com). They use prerecorded tracks, about which Mallard said he hasn’t heard complaints yet. In fact, a lot of cruise ship and national tours are going in that direction, he said. Live musicians are cost-prohibitive for the Element Lounge sessions, he said.
• Wintering in... : Suzanne Delle, who was the founding artistic director for Yellow Taxi Productions in Nashua (launched in 2002), started a new job in Newport, R.I., Jan. 1. Delle is now an assistant professor of theater arts at Salve Regina University and artistic director of the Stanford White Casino Theatre. Delle has also taught at Catholic University of America, Bridgewater State University, Rivier College, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Northeastern University, according to a press release from Salve Regina University.
