Abominable Iron Sloth, Abominable Iron Sloth
Goodfellow Records, 2006
Way to shake out the metal cobwebs, and from Goodfellow, that hotbed of stress-test math-metal geekdom, no less. Nothing this heavy has landed on this desk since the last Crowbar album (which you should still seek out and buy, and not just because they’re homeless thanks to Katrina), and even the song titles hate radio’s guts — try topping “Hats Made of Veal and That New Car Scent.” Justin Cash’s vocal cords emulate Sevendust’s incidental screamo fits and never deviate, riding waves of intelligently written, unrepentant doom riffing more akin to ’80s Trouble than anything else, although the meter never edges past Master of Reality speed. From the beginning, it’s on, an examination of what Helmet’s entry on a Sabbath tribute comp might sound like. Queens of the Stone Age fuzz-bombing and gimp-core jazz chords occur from time to time for modernity’s sake, but the gist of it is built around nothing more mysterious than the band’s name and the comic book that comprises the CD insert — it’s the sound of a Big Terrible Thing coming this way.
