Big Events May 12, 2022 and beyond

Thursday, May 12

It’s “Bark in the Park” this afternoon when the New Hampshire Fisher Cats take on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies at 6:35 p.m. at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in downtown Manchester and your dog is welcome (there are dog-designated seats and tickets for a dog/human pair cost $22). The Nashua Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale today from 8 a.m. to noon (rain or shine; cash or checks only) at the Nashua Historical Society (5 Abbott St. in Nashua). The event features a raffle of themed gift baskets and a yard sale of garden-themed items.

Also today, the Friends of the Plaistow Public Library has a plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the library (85 Main St. in Plaistow). The sale, officially called the Maryan Sullivan Memorial Sale, will feature annuals, perennials and raffles. The New Hampshire Audubon’s McLane Center (84 Silk Farm Road in Concord; 224-9909, nhaudubon.org) will hold its Big Day in May beginner bird walk today starting at 8 a.m. at the McLane Center. Head out for a one-to-two hour informal birding walk on the Turkey Pond trails, according to the website, which says all ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. The event is free but registration is required; go online to register.

Saturday, May 14

The Canterbury Shaker Village (288 Shaker Road in Canterbury; shakers.org) opens for the season today, with guided tours and, in partnership with Capital Area Race Series and Millennium Running, the annual 5K Cross Country Race at 10 a.m. Walk or run the unpaved course, which wraps around the Village’s trails, fields, ponds and pastures, according to the press release. Register for the race by Friday, May 13, at noon at shakers.org/cars-xc-5k-2022; the cost is $25.

Tuesday, May 17

Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops(2019), a film about two Texas police officers who respond to mental health crisis calls, will screen this evening at Red River Theatres (11 S. Main St. in Concord;224-4600, redrivertheatres.org). The event starts at 6 p.m. with dessert and networking, and the screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Joe Smarro, from the film, as well as Concord Chief of Police Bradley Osgood, Susan Steans (executive director of NAMI-NH), Sarah Gagnon (VP of Clinical Operations at Riverbend) and more. Tickets are free but reservations are required.

Kids Con New England returns in person to New Hampshire on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Everett Arena (15 Loudon Road in Concord). Tickets in advance cost $12 for kids ages 5 and up; $15 at the door (kids under 5 get in for free; admission for seniors, military and veterans costs $10). The event will feature more than 80 family-friendly artists, authors, creators and special guests, according to the press release, in addition to an art contest, kids and family costume contests, various workshops and more. Friday, May 6

The Actors Cooperative Theatre will kick off their final weekend of Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier at Hatbox Theatre (Steeplegate Mall 270 Loudon Road in Concord; hatboxnh.com) with a show tonight at 7:30 p.m., followed by shows tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 8, at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $22 for adults, $19 for seniors and students. The production offers a twist on the 1990s Aladdin story, telling the story from the point of Ja’far, according to a press release.

Friday, May 6

Saturday, May 7

The Concord Farmers Market moves outdoors for its first week today, from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Capitol Street. The market continues outdoors through the end of October. Visit concordfarmersmarket.com. Also kicking off its season today is the Contoocook Farmers Market, running from 9 a.m. to noon behind the Contoocook Trail Depot, on Main Street and feature music from the New Hampshire Music Collective musicians. The market runs through October and free parking is available in the municipal lot, at the train depot and on the street, according to a press release.

Saturday, May 7

Shop for some eats and arts (maybe for Mom, Mother’s Day is tomorrow, May 8) at the Henniker Handmade & Handgrown arts and farmers market featuring 65 vendors who will gather on the lawn in Henniker Community Center Park (57 Main St.) today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a press release. The market will feature live music (slated performers include Walker Smith, Decatur Creek and Beechwood), kids activities including a seed starting station, prepared food (including sausage subs, grilled on site), food fine arts, jewelry, pottery and more, the press release said.

After a two-year hiatus, the Seacoast Cat Club’s annual cat show returns to the Everett Arena (15 Loudon Road, Concord) today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Highlights include a cat petting area, a breeding presentation, and local vendor booths with various items for cats and their owners. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and for kids ages 5 to 12.

The Bedford Craftworkers’ Guild’s (3 Meetinghouse Road, Bedford) annual spring fair continues through today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., where you’ll find a wide variety of wares from local artisans, like jewelry, fibers, paintings, mixed media and more. Visit thecraftworkersguild.org.

The Nashua International Sculpture Symposium opens its 15th annual event on Thursday, May 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Picker Artists (3 Pine St. in Nashua). Meet the three artists — Anna Miller from Connecticut (pictured), Brent Howard from New Jersey and Corinna D’Schoto from Massachusetts — who will be creating pieces on this year’s theme “Merriment.” Visit the sculptures Mondays through Saturdays from May 16 through June 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to see them work. It’s a day of races.

The Dirty Paws 5K to support the Pope Memorial SPCA will kick off at 9 a.m. at the shelter (94 Silk Farm Road in Concord) and loop through the grounds of St. Paul’s School. Register online for the run/walk (for humans and dogs) at popememorialspca.org/dirtypaws5krun through Thursday, April 28, at 5 p.m.; onsite registration is also available on the day of the event. Registration is free for kids 13 and under and costs $25 for teens, $35 for 19+ in advance and $35 for teens, $40 for adults on the day.

Or run on the Londonderry Rail Trail to support the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire (27 Navigator Road in Londonderry; aviationmuseumofnh.org, 669-4877). The “Run the Rail Trail 5-Miler” starts at 9 a.m. at the museum. Registration costs $30 in advance and $35 on the day. The Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum (18 Highlawn Road in Warner; indianmuseum.org, 456-2600) opens for the season today from noon to 4 p.m.. Admission costs $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, $7 for children ages 6 to 12 and $26 for a family (two adults plus children).

Sunday, May 1

The Nashua Choral Society will present “Made for You and Me, Songs of America,” its free springtime concerts in Greeley Park (at the Bandshell, 100 Concord St. in Nashua) today at 3 p.m. (The rain date will be Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m.) The lineup will include patriotic songs, folk songs, sea shanties and a tribute to those in the armed forces, according to a press release, which recommends bringing a lawn chair or a blanket.

Sunday, May 1

The New Hampshire Jewish Film Festival is selling virtual tickets to a bingefest of the six-episode television showLabyrinth of Peace, set in Switzerland at the end of World War II. “Let’s assume for a moment that you are a dishonest man” — so starts the plan by Bialystock and Bloom to produce “the worst play ever written” and keep the backing money of their none-the-wiser investors. Things, of course, very much do not go as nefariously planned in the comedy musical based on the 1967 Mel Brooks movie. The Producers kicks off a four-week run at the Palace Theatre (80 Hanover St. in Manchester; palacetheatre.org, 668-5588) tonight with a show at 7:30 p.m. Showtimes are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at noon through May 15. Tickets cost $39 to $46 for adults.

Thursday, April 21

Catch Lucas Gallo and Friends tonight at the Bank of NH Stage (16 S. Main St. in Concord; ccanh.com). The show starts at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15 (plus fees).

Also at the Bank of NH Stage this weekend is The Senie Hunt Project, which will be performing Saturday, April 23, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $18 (plus fees). Earth Day is Friday, April 22, but the New Hampshire Audubon’s Massabesic Center (26 Audubon Way in Auburn; nhaudubon.org) is celebrating today with a day of family-friendly activities including guided nature walks, bluebird nest-box building, animal presentations, storytime, crafts and more. Saturday, April 23

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord (starhop.com) and the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum (18 Highlawn Road in Warner; indianmuseum.org) will hold an event called “Spemki Nib8iwi: The Heavens in the Nighttime” today at 7 p.m. Bring chairs for an evening of stargazing (the Discovery Center will provide telescopes), a campfire and storytelling; the museum will offer hot beverages. Admission is free.

The following day, Sunday, April 24, is Bittersweet Day at the museum, when they will present a day-long lineup of events focused on clearing the museum ground’s patches of the invasive plant bittersweet. See the website for details.

Calling all Abbott Elementary fans: Start the April vacation week (for some New Hampshire students) with some teacher humor live when the Bored Teachers Comedy Tour featuring a lineup of teacher comedians comes to the Palace Theatre (80 Amherst St. in Manchester; palacetheatre.org, 668-5588) tonight at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $30. The New Hampshire Fisher Cats continue their season opening slate of games at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in downtown Manchester with a game tonight at 6:35 p.m. The Fisher Cats faces off against the Hartford Yard Goats in games through Sunday, April 17. Game times are at 6:35 p.m. daily through Saturday and 1:35 p.m. Sunday. From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays everybody gets in for free as part of Art After Work, which today also features music by Ramez Gurung.

Bob Marley, recently voted Best of the Best in the Best Local (-ish) Comedian category of Hippo’s Best of 2022 readers’ poll, will kick off a run of performances at the Palace Theatre (80 Hanover St. in Manchester; palacetheatre.org, 668-5588) starting today with a show at 7:30 p.m. Marley will also perform Friday, April 8, at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 9, at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets cost $39.50.

Today is the monthly free admission Saturday at the Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester; currier.org) for all New Hampshire residents from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will also host a Creative Studio event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., when participants of this family-friendly event can take inspiration from the new exhibition “Warhol Screen Test” to paint some pop art style works, according to the website.

The museum kicks off Membership Appreciation Week on Sunday, April 10, when members can receive special perks and discounts and get a preview tour of the Arghavan Khosravi exhibit that will open Thursday, April 14.

Discuss and watch the silent films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Mack Sennett at a presentation by the Walker Lecture Series tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Concord City Auditorium (2 Prince St. in Concord; theaudi.org). The event is free.
