Liven up your winter evening with a little poetry and music. Rob Azevedo will read from his book of poetry, Don’t Order the Calamari, and musicians Becca Myari and Todd Hearon will perform tonight at 6 p.m. at the Bookery Manchester (844 Elm St. in downtown Manchester; bookerymht.com). Admission is free but go online to register. Friday, Feb. 4

Catch up with the University of New Hampshire team sending an experiment to the International Space Station tonight at 7 p.m. as part of the virtual Super Stellar Friday program at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center (2 Institute Drive in Concord; starhop.com, 271-7827). Team Cooke NoMADS — Novel Methods of Antibiotic Discovery in Space — will explain their experiment and talk about their experiences working with NASA, according to the website, where you can register for this free virtual program.

The center is open for in-person visits, Fridays through Sundays with sessions from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Admission costs $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for students and seniors, $8.50 for children ages 3 to 12 and free for kids 2 and under. Planetarium tickets are an additional $5 per person. Reserve tickets for a session online in advance.

Friday, Feb. 4

Comedian Jim Colliton brings the laughs to the Rex Theatre (23 Amherst St. in Manchester; 668-5588, palacetheatre.org) tonight at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased at the Palace website, where you can find a link to clips from Colliton’s DryBar sets.

Saturday, Feb. 5

Get some fresh produce and fresh baked goods and other must-haves for a yummy weekend at the Contoocook Farmers Market today from 9 a.m. to noon at Maple Street School (194 Maple St. in Contoocook).

Save the date! Galentine’s Day

Grab your besties and your vaccination card for a screening of Bridesmaids (R, 2011) on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at Red River Theatres (11 S. Main St. in Concord; redrivertheatres.org, 224-4600). Tickets cost $12. The screening is a “snax and vax” screening, which means that the concession stand will be open and attendees are required to show proof of full vaccination.

Thursday, Jan. 27

The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire will present a screening of the documentary Simba: King of the Beasts (1928) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Wilton Town Hall Theatre (40 Main St. in Wilton; wiltontownhalltheatre.com). Admission costs $10 per person and supports the museum, according to a press release. The silent film will be accompanied by live music by Jeff Rapsis. The film is part of a presentation — “Martin and Osa Johnson: Adventure’s First Couple,” which will also include a lecture, the release said.

Friday, Jan. 28

Also opening tonight: Mary & Me, a one-woman show about a girl in 1980s Ireland, at the Hatbox Theatre (270 Loudon Road in Concord; hatboxnh.com, 715-2315). Tonight’s show is at 7:30 p.m. The show will run Fridays (7:30 p.m.), Saturdays (7:30 p.m.) and Sundays (2 p.m.) through Sunday, Feb. 13. Tickets cost $22 for adults. Friday, Jan. 28

Heat up winter with The Full Monty, the musical based on the 1997 film, which begins a four-week run at the Palace Theatre (80 Hanover St. in Manchester; palacetheatre.org, 668-5588) tonight with a show at 7:30 p.m. The show runs Fridays through Sundays, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays and noon on Sundays, as well as Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $39 and $46 (plus fees, for adults). Inject a little art into your midday. The Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester; 669-6144, currier.org) has restarted its Wednesday “Art Conversations from Home” sessions at 1 p.m. via Zoom. Each week a different work is discussed during the 30-minute program (which is geared toward adults). Admission is free but register online in advance. This week the focus will be Franz Lenk’s “The Old Weir (Altes Wehr).”

The Concord Garden Club and the League of NH Craftsmen come together for the annual Art & Bloom exhibit, which runs today through Saturday, Jan. 22. Hours are 1 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the exhibit gallery at the League’s headquarters (49 S. Main St. in Concord). In this short-lived exhibit, the League’s exhibit “Setting the Standard,” featuring pieces in a variety of media, serves as the inspiration for floral arrangements by Garden Club members and others. The regular hours of the “Setting the Standard” exhibit will start Tuesday, Jan. 25, and run through March 31, Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.

Fight cabin fever with a visit to the Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester; currier.org, 669-6144) today from 5 to 8 p.m. when admission is free as part of “Art After Work: Free Thursday Nights.” Old Tom and the Lookouts will be performing in the Winter Garden Cafe and the tours will focus on Robert S. Duncanson’s “Long Point on the Gauley River, Virginia” and the exhibit “As Precious as Gold: Carpets from the Islamic World.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition is holding a community celebration today from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. This virtual program, which you can access at mlknh.org, is called “Love Not Hate” and will feature music by the Manchester High School West Jazz Band, music by the MLK Jr. Choir, special guest TJ Wheeler and “community shared reading of excerpts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1957 sermon ‘Loving Your Enemies,” according to the website.

The Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester; currier.org, 669-6144) is also commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a virtual program at 11 a.m. called “Invisibility: An Art Conversation and Visual Response.” Register on the website, which describes the event as a “live program over Zoom about invisibility and related issues of love and hate. We’ll begin with a conversation about paintings by Norman Lewis and Glenn Ligon and conclude with a collaborative visual response.” The museum, which is usually closed Mondays, will be open today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Get out and enjoy nature in winter with a guided winter hike/snowshoe at Beaver Brook Association’s Maple Hill Farm (117 Ridge Road in Hollis; 465-7787, hbeaverbrook.org) today from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The hike is listed as open to ages 14 and up; registration costs $20, according to the website. Looking to get outside? Check out the Educational Farm at Joppa Hill (174 Joppa Hill Road in Bedford; theeducationalfarm.org, 472-4724), which is open daily from dawn to dusk. Find trail information online. When the weather is cold enough, the farm’s rink will be open for ice skating. The cost is $5.

Or head to one of New Hampshire Audubon’s 39 sanctuaries for hiking (or snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, weather permitting). Find trails for the sanctuaries, which are open from dawn to dusk and located throughout the state, at nhaudubon.org.

Thursday, Dec. 30

The light shows continue through this weekend: The Gift of Lights at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (1122 Route 106 North, Loudon), runs daily through Sunday, Jan. 2. The 2½-mile drive-thru light show features a variety of scenes making up more than 500 different light displays along the track. It’s open from 4:30 to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 4:30 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, depending on weather conditions. The cost ranges from $30 to $35 per carload, and is $60 per limo or bus. See nhms.com.

The show’s opening night is Jan. 28 and it runs through Sunday, Feb. 20, with shows Fridays through Sundays (as well as on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m.) Tickets cost $46 for adults.
