• LGBT history exhibit: The Seacoast LGBT History Project holds its sixth annual show, titled “Standing Together,” at RiverStones Custom Framing and The Franklin Gallery (33 N. Main St., Rochester) now through Wednesday, Aug. 31. The Gallery is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be an opening reception for this exhibit on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m., with light refreshments to be served. • Opening night — Peterborough: The show 2 Pianos 4 Hands, about two performers as they grow from children to adults and featuring a variety of music styles, according to the website, opens Thursday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Peterborough Players indoor stage (55 Hadley Road in Peterborough; peterboroughplayers.org, 924-7575). NUNSENSE THE MUSICAL
The Majestic Theatre (880 Page St., Manchester) presents Nunsense The Musical, from Aug. 12 to Aug. 21. The show follows the Little Sisters of Hoboken after they discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they need to raise money for the burials. They decide to put on a variety show, and hilarity ensues. Nunsense will run Friday, Aug. 12, Saturday, Aug. 13, Friday, Aug. 19, and Saturday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors ages 65 and over and for kids and teens ages 17 and under. • Opening night — Concord: Bubble Boy, the musical based on the 2001 Jake Gyllenhaal-fronted movie of the same name, opens on Friday, Aug. 5, at the Hatbox Theatre (270 Loudon Road in Concord; hatboxnh.com, 715-2315). Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets cost $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and students. • Welcome to Sherwood Forest: The Winnipesaukee Playhouse Professional Company (33 Footlight Circle in Meredith; winnipesaukeeplayhouse.org) presents Robin Hood through Saturday, Aug. 13. The show, which was slated to have its opening night Aug. 3, continues with shows on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Aug. 10, through Saturday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $39 and $29.

• Singing nuns: Sister Act is on the stage at the Interlakes Theatre (1 Laker Lane in Meredith; interlakestheatre.com, 707-6035). Slated to open Aug. 3, the show continues through Aug. 14 with shows at 2 p.m. on Thursdays; 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and Wednesday, Aug. 10, and 5 p.m. on Sundays. • Shakespeare: Project Shakespeare’s PS Too! Youth Company will present The Taming of the Shrew on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Peterborough Community Center Lawn (25 Elm St. in Peterborough). • More Shakespeare: Ballet Misha will perform an original ballet adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Concord City Auditorium (2 Prince St.), and on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m. at the John Hay Estate at The Fells (456 Route 103A, Newbury). The ballet tells the classic Shakespeare tale of lovers interfered with by mystical forces. At The Fells, the performance will take place outside under the pavilion, allowing guests to enjoy a picnic dinner while watching. KEEPING TRACK OF TIME
The Gallery at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth presents “Keeping Track of Time,”which features work by Philip Brou. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., when Brou will give a brief talk about the work. Brou, whose work consists of ink wash drawings and watercolor paintings, created this exhibition during the pandemic. He used his passion for running to examine how we dealt with time during isolation, both running and slowing down. There are a total of 197 drawings documenting each time he went running during the pandemic. The exhibit remains open until Oct. 2 during regular business hours, and is free and open to the public. • Book talk With Kennedy biographer: Acclaimed biographer Kate Clifford Larson, author of Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter and Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero, visits the Nashua Public Library (2 Court St., Nashua, 589-4600, nashualibrary.org) on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. to discuss her New York Times bestselling book about Rosemary Kennedy. • The Demon Barber of Keefe Auditorium: Actorsingers (actorsingers.org) will hold auditions for its November production of Sweeney Toddon Sunday, Aug. 14, and Monday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Actorsingers Hall (219 Lake St. in Nashua). • Save the date to be part of that world: Tickets are on sale now for Disney’s The Little Mermaid, the season-opening musical at the Palace Theatre (80 Hanover St. in Manchester; palacetheatre.org, 668-5588), which will run Friday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 2. NATURALLY NEW ENGLAND EXHIBIT
The Livery (58 Main St., Sunapee Harbor) is hosting “Naturally New England,” an exhibit featuring works by local artists, now through Sunday, Aug. 7, to help raise money for the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust and the Center for the Arts NH. The collection of work celebrates the natural beauty of New England’s landscape and features more than 60 artists showcasing a wide diversity of works. • JESSICA KELLY The New Hampshire Boat Museum (399 Center St., Wolfeboro, 569-4554, nhbm.org) will host a member reception on Friday, Aug. 5, for local artist Jessica Kelly, whose work will be featured in the museum’s gallery in August. Working in photography, the art depicts coastal scenes and other natural beauties. Kelly’s work is available for viewing with paid admission to the museum. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, and free for children under 13, members, and active military personnel.

• “ARGHAVAN KHOSRAVI” Artist’s surrealist paintings explore themes of exile, freedom and empowerment; center female protagonists; and allude to human rights issues, particularly those affecting women and immigrants. • “MANAGING MISCELLANEA” The Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy (11 Tan Lane, Exeter) hosts “Managing Miscellanea,” an art exhibition that draws from the gallery’s “undefined” collection. It centers around questions of defining and maintaining collections, and showcases unseen works from the storage vault, including works by Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Motherwell. • THE RHYTHM OF NEW HAMPSHIRE SHOW CHORUS Women’s a cappella chorus is looking for female singers in the region to join. The group, an affiliate of the North American singing organization Harmony, Inc., performs a wide variety of music, including Broadway musical songs, patriotic songs, pop, jazz and seasonal pieces, for community and veterans’ events and private functions. Rehearsals are held weekly on Thursdays from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 W. Broadway, Derry. • Unwind with art: At this week’s Art After Work at the Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester; currier.org, 669-6144) catch live music from Halley Neal during the weekly event, which features free admission from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Also on Thursday, July 28, the exhibition tours are of the newly installed second floor east galleries (at 5:30 p.m.) and of the Arghavan Khosravi exhibit (6:30 p.m.), according to the website. In addition to live music and free admission, during Art After Work, the museum’s cafe offers happy hour drink specials and the full menu available for purchase, the website said. Next week, the jazz group Causeway Collective will play the Art After Work on Thursday, Aug. 4.

• Midsummer’s night theater: The Dana Center for the Humanities at Saint Anselm College (100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester) will finish up its presentation of Shakespeare on the Green this weekend. • Reports from ‘Little America’: Author Ken Kalfus will discuss and sign his new novel, 2 A.M. In Little America, at the Toadstool Bookshop in Peterborough (12 Depot Square; toadbooks.com, 924-3543) on Saturday, July 30, at 2 p.m. The novel “imagines a future in which sweeping civil conflict has forced America’s young people to flee its borders” according to the Toadstool website, which describes the book as “brimming with mystery, suspense and Kalfus’s distinctive comic irony.”

Zoe Brooke’s art in Exeter
A new exhibit will run at the Seacoast Art Association (130 Water St., Exeter) from Aug. 3 through Aug. 28. Zoe Brooke, a self-taught artist whose work can be found in galleries across New England, presents an exhibition with a sense of urgency. Diagnosed last year with a rare genetic eye disease, Brooke will eventually lose her central and color vision. For now, she has set out to create as many works as possible. Her exhibit, called “Wellspring,” is available to be seen during regular gallery hours, Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. A public reception will be held to celebrate the collection on Friday, Aug. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Visit seacoastartist.org.

• Book signing in Tilton: Poet and artist Jeff Mellin will sign copies of his new book, Player Piano (Dream 19),on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Book Warehouse at Tanger Outlets (120 Laconia Road in Tilton; 286-7880). • Under the sea: Tickets are on sale now for the Peacock Players’ production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr., which will run Friday, Aug. 5, through Sunday Aug. 7, and Friday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Court Street Theater (14 Court St. in Nashua). The play follows the story of a Kenyan restaurant owner who is vehemently anti-monarchy but is given the opportunity to cook for Princess Elizabeth in 1952. At the same time, it follows a Kenyan-Canadian film student in 2015 as she reckons with the history of colonialism. • Mural project for Manchester: The deadline is 9 p.m. Monday, July 25, to donate to Arts Build Community’s fundraiser to bring a mural festival to Manchester in August. The Community Canvas festival is meant to “amplify community voices rather than the individual,” according to the fundraiser page at patronicity.com. Arts Build Community is a New Hampshire-based group of artists, residents, businesses and others, and for the mural project. the artists “will engage, research, and reflect while actively listening to community members, integrating their stories into each mural,” the fundraiser page said. Carroll, who won the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (the Genius Grant) in 2006, has written and illustrated the natural histories The Year of the Turtle, Trout Reflections and Swampwalkers Journal as well as a memoir called Self-Portrait with Turtles and a fifth book called Following the Warner, A hydromancer’s Notebook, the release said. His natural history drawings and watercolors have been on exhibit at the Currier Museum of Art, according to the release. • “WARHOL SCREEN TESTS” In the mid-1960s, American multimedia artist Andy Warhol had shot more than 400 short, silent, black-and-white films of his friends at his studio in New York City. Warhol referred to the films, which were unscripted and played in slow motion, as “film portraits” or “stillies.” The exhibition will feature 20 of those films, provided by the Andy Warhol Museum, in loops across four large-scale projections. Through the fire
For one night and one night only, the Village Players present Through the Fire, Victor Almanzar’s newest work. On Friday, July 8, at 7:30 p.m., Almanzar will give a preview performance of the production at the Player’s theater (51 Glendon St. in Wolfboro). Almanzar, seen in Homeland, Empire and Pulitzer prize-winning Between Riverside and Crazy, shares his own life’s story through this hip-hop-filled production developed by Wolfeboro local Estelle Parsons, an Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated actress. The show, which follows Almanzar as he immigrates from the Dominican Republic to New York and spends time serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Kosovo and Iraq, will be headed to New York City in the coming weeks, and this preview performance at the Village Players Theater will benefit the theater. • Art as a response: Ukrainian sculptor Natasha Dikareva opens an exhibition called “From Whispering to Screaming” at the Seacoast Artist Association gallery at 130 Water St. in downtown Exeter, as a “response to war on her country with art.” Dikareva, an internationally acclaimed sculptor who now lives in Newmarket, describes the collection as a reaction to both the pandemic and the war in her homeland. Summer Exhibit and Sale
New Hampshire Art Association photographer Gary Samson will display his work in an exhibit titled “Unburdened Beauty: Portraits of Women in the 21st Century” at Creative Framing Solutions (410 Chestnut St., Manchester) from Friday, July 1, through Sunday, July 31. Samson takes a unique approach in his photography, shooting on film and opting to use a large wooden view camera mounted on a tripod, in an attempt to slow the process and allow room for thought and conversation to be captured in the final image, according to a press release sent by the Association. Samson is a New Hampshire native and “the seventh Artist Laureate of New Hampshire and has been awarded numerous grants, fellowships and honors for his photography and film work over the past five decades,” the release said. Londonderry Arts Council will host musician Veronica Lewis on Wednesday, July 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Londonderry Town Common (265 Mammoth Road, Londonderry) as part of their Concerts on the Common program. According to American Songwriter Magazine, “Veronica Lewis is one of the most promising torchbearers of American rock ‘n’ roll,” as an artist she mixes the technique of different genres to create a unique sound. Her lyrics are both “thought provoking and humorous.” Lewis is a New Hampshire native, according to a press release sent by Concerts on the Common, “Veronica fuses these crucial elements together with the true language of the blues, and the energy of the early rock and rollers, like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, to create a truly individual style that is completely Veronica Lewis.” Lewis has traveled nationally, performing for different audiences. Mural Festival Fundraising
Local artist James Chase in collaboration with Arts Build Community is seeking fundraising for their “Community Canvas” project. The funding will be used to produce a 10-day-long mural festival running from Aug. 11 through Aug. 21, involving local and non-local muralists working toward the completion of seven murals throughout Manchester. This project was created with the hope of uniting and inspiring the community through art. “This program that we’re launching is about building with the community, not for the community. So that way the murals reflect the community’s needs, values, and culture…. We’re doing our due diligence ahead of time working with nonprofits to really raise and reflect community voices as we’re making these murals,” Chase said. The program holds a goal of raising $50,000 by July; they currently have raised $18,000. Chase plans to use the funds raised to buy supplies, pay artists and hold community events. “I think that murals and art in general has an opportunity to uplift, to increase voices, to instill community pride.” Chase said, “and a lot of what’s going to be happening in the making in between is just as important as the final piece. • Pulitzer Prize-winning author: The Monadnock Writers’ Group hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack E. Davis on Saturday, June 18, at 9:45 a.m. at Bass Hall in the Monadnock Center for History and Culture (19 Grove St., Peterborough). Davis, who is a past MacDowell fellow, will be discussing his new book, The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird. Both the book and his talk will include, according to a press release sent by the group, a collection of stories detailing “Founding Fathers, brutal hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves — monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents.” The event is free and open to the public, but masks will be required for all attendees. • Local author: The Toadstool Bookshop hosts Andrea Paquette, a board certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Holistic Nurse Practitioner from Manchester, to talk about her new book, Lovable: How Women Can Heal Their Sensitive Hearts and Live and Love as Their True Selves on Saturday, June 18, at 6 p.m. at their Nashua location (Somerset Plaza, 375 Amherst St., Nashua). The book consists of collected stories from Paquette and clients she has treated throughout her career. According to a press release sent by the bookshop, the book is intended for women “who feel as though they are playing a role in life rather than living as their authentic selves.” Through her book, Paquette offers healing strategies for those in need of emotional support and empowerment. Paquette has more than 30 years of experience in health care, even owning her own private practice, located in Londonderry. Through her treatment of children she became aware of the common stressors mothers endure and set out to develop strategies to help them cope. She completed training as a Life Coach in 2018 and has since successfully taught “women to express their authentic selves, use their talents in the world, and create a life they love.”

Father’s Day festival
Castleberry Fairs and Festivals will host a Father’s Weekend Craft Festival rain or shine on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Deerfield Fairgrounds (34 Stage Road, Deerfield). The festival will offer more than 100 “juried artisans” displaying and selling their work, which, according to the Castleberry website, will include pottery, folk art, jewelry, quilts, photography, glass, metal sculpture, candles and more. • Music festival: The Halcyon Music Festival returns from Thursday, June 16, through Saturday, June 25, at St. John’s Episcopal Church (101 Chapel St., Portsmouth), with all performances happening at 7 p.m. Featuring six different chamber music programs, the festival unites 21 musicians to perform over a 10-day span. The festival’s artistic director and pianist, Heng-Jin Park, commented on the upcoming festival in a press release sent out. “This year’s roster of world-class artists includes a great mix of musicians whom our festival audiences have come to know and love as well as several new faces, including New Hampshire native and violinist Laurel Gagnon,” she said. The festival will host shows nightly from June 16 to June 18 before pausing for a small break, and then resuming nightly from June 23 to June 25. Performances will include music from renowned composers such as Strauss, Arensky, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and others. Tickets are available now online via halcyonmusicfestival.org/concerts. • Silent art auction and social: The Miss Manchester Scholarship Program will host a silent art auction and social event at the Palace Theatre’s Spotlight Room (96 Hanover St., Manchester) on Sunday, June 26, from 1 to 5 p.m. Proceeds from the bidding will go toward scholarship funds for the program. The auction will feature more than 25 pieces of artwork from “local artisans and generous artists.” Bidding will begin at 1:30 p.m. and go until 4 p.m. Attendees can expect live music, light fare and a cash bar. • Author talk and book signing: The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire hosts Francis Gary Powers Jr. at the Wilton Town Hall Theatre (40 Main St. Wilton) on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m., for a presentation on the legacy of his father, as discussed in his 2019 book, Spy Pilot: Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 Incident, and a Controversial Cold War Legacy. According to a press release sent by the museum, the event will begin and end with short screenings of “vintage Cold War-era Civil Defense films,” followed by a one-hour presentation by Powers detailing his research into the famous failed espionage mission his father was involved in. Such failure resulted in President Dwight Eisenhower being forced to publicly admit the CIA’s years-long secret spy missions over the Soviet Union. After the presentation, Powers will host a signing of his book, which details his search for truth following his father’s death in 1977 and “how his research clarified his father’s place in a pivotal Cold War episode.” Tickets for the event cost $10 per person, general admission. The event is free for members of the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire. Studio 54 at the Currier
Bust out your bell bottoms and platform heels, as the Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St.in Manchester; currier.org) is hosting a Studio 54-inspired event to celebrate its current Andy Warhol Screentests exhibit on Friday, June 17, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the museum. The event will offer guests the chance to throw it back (to the era of disco) on the dance floor, lounge around and enjoy cocktails, nibble on hors d’oeuvres, take in the exhibit and even create their own screen tests in a photo booth. Dress code is dress to impress, ’70s nightclub-inspired; those who are deemed best dressed by the museum will be awarded prizes. Other prizes being offered by the museum include one ticket holder winning a year’s membership to the museum with a curated gift basket and five other ticket holders winning a year’s membership. This event is being held in collaboration with Queen City Pride as part of their annual Pride Week. Tickets to the event cost $50 per person, which includes the price of hors d’oeuvres. • Shakespeare live: Cue Zero Theatre Company presents Macbeth, running from Friday, June 17, to Sunday, June 19, at the Derry Opera House (29 W. Broadway, Derry) with showings at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. A livestream option is also available for those who wish to view from their homes, accessible online via CZTheatre.com. Director Dan Pelletier noted his desire to reimagine the classic play from a “female-driven interpretation,” and in a press release sent by Cue Zero Theatre Company he said, “It can be argued that all of the important action of the play is motivated by the ambitions and desires of Lady Macbeth. … I’ve always had a deep fascination with the paranormal and have been dying to do a piece where the direction can embrace that. This piece provides the perfect opportunity, as we accentuate the dark arts of the witches and reimagine Lady Macbeth as a practitioner of witchcraft herself.” Tickets are available online via cztheatre.com/index.php/tickets or at the door, $15 per person, general admission. Student discounts are available (high school and college), at a rate of $22 for two tickets when you pay with cash at the door and present two valid student IDs.

• Larger-than-life portraits: 3S Artspace presents Hall of Portraits from the History of Machines, running in the gallery (319 Vaughan St., Portsmouth) from June 3 through July 31. The gallery is free to the public and is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Sue Johnson, the artist behind the work being featured, intended the exhibit to be a “re-imagination of the historical portrait gallery,” according to a press release. Featuring nine works, sizing up at 109.25 inches tall (about 9 feet!), each work depicts an “imagined” woman through a satirized perspective of domesticity. This exhibit will be the first time all nine of Johnson’s works will have been displayed alongside one another. Each work is digitally compiled by Johnson, who prints the work onto canvas, which is then “surrounded by a hand-made color field with painted textures derived from assorted brands of disposable paper towels and coffee filters, window screening, machine-made lace, embroidery fragments, window cleaning squeegees, and DIY wood graining tools.” Johnson took inspiration for the exhibit from her decades-long work with historic media and materials produced for women, in combination with studying domesticity in the 20th century, and from her own perception of her mother’s life. “In all of them [the hybrid women] I recognize my mother and myself, and the persistent ways in which the boundaries of the female domain have been and continue to be defined,” she said.

Art-filled summer
A public opening reception to kick off a summer of art-packed events will be held by the Kimball Jenkins School of Art (266 N. Main St., Concord) on Friday, June 10, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event will celebrate the opening of the Carolyn Jenkins and Jill C. Wilson galleries’ Summer 2022 Master Artists exhibit with live music, light refreshments, and the opportunity to converse with some of the featured artists. The galleries will display works from local artists such as Richard Haynes, Dustin Knight, Patricia Schappler, Marcus Greene and Patrick McCay. The gallery will be the focus of the school’s arts education summer programs offered. Such events include “a seven-week mural and creative placemaking internship program for teens, and eight-week summer camp.” According to a press release sent by the school, “The youth in both programs will have the opportunity to work with and learn from the master artists in workshops and presentations throughout the summer.” The exhibition will run throughout the entirety of the summer, from June 8 through Aug. 19. • Sculptures revealed: The 15th annual Nashua International Sculpture Symposium will conclude with a closing ceremony, open to the public, on Saturday, June 4, at 1 p.m. at the installation site, which is near the old bridge on Commercial Street in Nashua. This year’s artists — Anna Miller from Connecticut, Brent Howard from New Jersey and Corinna D’Schoto from Massachusetts — have spent the last few weeks working at the Picker Artist studios in Nashua to create three outdoor sculptures based on the theme of “Merriment” for permanent installation in the city. “This is all for the sake of the public, for accessible public art,” Jim Larson, the sculpture symposium’s artistic director, told the Hippo last month. “The art produced is not a luxury object that you would see in a gallery — it is everyday artwork that is impactful and powerful. [It shows] we need artwork in our life every day, like food.” A map of the existing sculpture sites, along with suggested walking and biking tour routes, is available at nashuasculpturesymposium.org.

Manchester art fest
Save the date for the first annual Manchester Citywide Arts Festival, set for Monday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Sept. 18. The weeklong celebration of the arts will feature performances, gallery openings, speakers, walking tours, live art-making and more throughout downtown Manchester, culminating in a free, family-friendly street fair on Hanover Street on Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18, which will include an arts market with booths by dozens of local artists and craftspeople, interactive art installations and experiences, live performances by local musicians and dancers, food vendors and more.
