Superhero season — 05/04/23

Summer movie season begins Friday, May 5, with the release of another Marvel movie — can it and other summer releases help save the day for theaters looking to increase their ticket sales? On Saturday, May 6, you can find superheroes (and their stories) and more at Free Comic Book Day events. And on Saturday, May 13, younger fans can celebrate their own love of characters of all stripes (and books! and reading!) at the Kids Con New England. In this week’s cover story, we take a look at all these aspects of superhero season.

Also on the cover The New Hampshire Gay Men’s Chorus celebrates their 25th anniversary with a concert series starting this weekend (page 16). The New Hampshire Farm, Forest & Garden Expo comes to the Deerfield Fairgrounds on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6 (page 19). Get ready for Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14) by checking out the list of meals and treats on page 24.

PB & J — 03/23/23

The traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich that says comfort, nostalgia and a quick meal takes several twists when John Fladd brings those flavors to cake, souffle, pancakes (pictured), sorbet, a breakfast sandwich and even cocktails. And if you’re looking to keep the standard form but still experiment a little with the flavors, Matt Ingersoll looks at jams and jellies made locally.

Also on the cover An upcoming spotlight on local female musicians (April 1 at SNHU) is the focus of this week’s Arts section, which starts on page 15 and also highlights theater, visual arts and classical music events this weekend. Also showcasing women in music is an event for four rising stars of the local music scene at Shaskeen in Manchester on Saturday, March 25. And speaking of rising stars, Matt Ingersoll talks to Chef Chris Viaud about his newest restaurant. This week’s food section, which starts on page 24, also takes a look at the new breakfast menu at Shaker Road Provisions in Concord.

Time to get chickens? — 03/09/23

Looking for chicks? Or pullets? Or, if you’re really ambitious, unhatched fertilized eggs? If egg inflation or a DIY backyard farmer spirit has you thinking about adding chickens to your spring and summer outdoor plans, check out this chicken primer by Angie Sykeny, who discusses chicken chores, chicken costs and some of the hazards.

Also on the cover: Saint Patrick’s Day is next Friday, March 17, so make those plans for corned beef or colcannon now; see page 25 for a rundown of area eateries and their Irish cuisine plans. Beyond chickens, a place to consider your spring and summer outdoor plans may be the New Hampshire Outdoor Expo this weekend in Milford; Mya Blanchard has the details on page 17. And, the Amherst Fire and Ice festival of chili and ice cream this Friday in Amherst; Matt Ingersoll explains on page 24.
